Are there ghosts on Blennerhassett Island? Without question, the island with its reconstructed mansion (now a West Virginia State Park) is historically significant. But it is also steeped in tragedy. The Blennerhassett story, which began with a wealthy couple's extravagant vision of a paradise in the wilderness, would eventually become a riches-to-rags story. Their dramatic, star-crossed story can best be told with truth and tale. It began with a dream. Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett arrived in the Ohio Valley from England in 1797, bringing wealth and refinement to the emerging frontier settlements of Marietta, Ohio and Parkersburg, Virginia (now West Virginia.) Their island property, located in the middle of the Ohio River, became the site of a luxurious estate, said to be one of the grandest homes in the West. But their attempts to create paradise were soon fraught with disappointment and failure. Eventually, their alliance with former Vice President Aaron Burr in what became known as the Aaron Burr Conspiracy resulted in their ruin. Margaret's Ghost and Other True and Tragic Stories of Blennerhassett Island combines history and hearsay to colorfully tell their heartbreaking story.

For anyone interested in West Virginia/Ohio history, this is beautifully researched, and concisely written. The author is very clear about what is known and what is conjecture or area myth; she also traces the Blennerhassett's fascinating connection to the Aaron Burr conspiracy, and others. Each page is illustrated with photographs. There's a helpful timeline at the end of this 8 1/2 x 11 glossy-covered book. Would be a great read for anyone traveling through the area, especially prior to visiting the West Virginia State Park island where the reconstructed Blennerhassett mansion is open to visitors. A must for those interested in Aaron Burr. Lots in here, too, about Indians and settler history in what is now Ohio. Perfect family educational/fun exploration.Product details

Margaret Ghost and other true and tragic stories of Blennerhassett Island Debra Conner 9781497590878 Books Reviews
A really nice book of family interest. Recommended to anyone with an interest in the island or just as a general curiosity
Great Story, I love reading about the history of Blennerhassett Island.
This appears to be a middle-school child's book. It is well written, but not as adult book. Grossly overpriced as an adult book. I was looking for more detail, particularly since I have been to Blennerhassett.
This is a book rich in history and high in interest. It will appeal to readers of many ages. I have given it to a seventh-grader who may use it for a dramatic history report, and I will be sending it home with AFS exchange students.
